Hexagon box template (lid and base)

Enter the inside size of the base and the dieline below draws a six-sided box and its lid on one sheet. A hexagon has no single width, so the box is sized across the flats: the inside distance from one flat side to the one opposite. Set the height of the base and how far the lid comes down over it. Download it free, or open it in the Studio to add artwork and watch it fold in 3D.

Cutting template: two straight-line hexagonal cartons on one sheet, the base and the lid. Each has six walls in a row with a glue flap, a hexagon panel hinged on the back wall, and a flap with 60° sides on each of the other five walls. Width is the inside across the flats, height the inside height of the base, and depth how far the lid comes down over it; the lid is sized to slide over the base with a little play. Lid play, the glue flap and the flaps are adjustable. Ask your printer to confirm the allowances for their board.

What is a hexagon box?

A hexagon box is a six-sided box: a regular hexagonal base and a lid that lifts off it, like a telescope box with six walls instead of four. The shape stands out on a shelf and suits round products such as candles, jars and rolled goods, as well as chocolates, tea, soap and small gifts. This template makes it in folding carton, so both pieces ship flat and are glued once.

What is on the dieline

Both pieces are drawn on one sheet from your three measurements: the lid at the top, the base below it.

  • Six walls in a row, each one side of the hexagon, with a glue flap at the end that is stuck inside the last wall to make a six-sided tube.
  • A hexagon panel hinged on the back wall: the base's bottom and the lid's top.
  • A flap on each of the other five walls, cut with 60° sides so the five fit together inside the hexagon, glued to the inside of the panel.
  • The lid: the same construction, sized to the base's outside plus play, so it slides on without forcing. It is a board wider again for its own glue flap.
  • Cut, crease, glue, bleed and safe-zone lines on separate layers.

How to fold a hexagon box

For each piece: glue the glue flap inside the back right wall to make the tube, and let it dry. Fold the five flaps in, put glue on them, and fold the hexagon panel over them, pressing it on from inside the tube. Fold both pieces the same way, then put the lid on the base. In the Studio the walls wrap round into a hexagon, the flaps fold in, and the lid turns over and lands on the base; the open slider lifts it off. The hexagon box guide walks through it step by step.

Choosing the size, lid and board

Measure the product's widest point and add a few millimetres: that is the size across the flats. A round product such as a candle needs that diameter across the flats, since that is the narrowest part of a hexagon. The height is the inside of the base. A lid a quarter to a third as deep as the box is easy to lift; set it to the full height for a stronger box, but no deeper than the base. Card of 18–24 pt suits most gifts; use a thicker board for heavier contents.

How to use the file

Sending it to a printer

Send the PDF or the layered SVG. Cut lines are solid red and creases dashed blue, each on its own layer; the bleed line is 3 mm outside the cut, so run background artwork out to it, and keep text inside the safe-zone line, 3 mm in. Ask the printer to confirm the hexagon box allowances for their board before they make the die.

Cutting tables and laser cutters

Use the DXF: millimetres at 1:1, with cut lines on a CUT layer and creases on a CREASE layer, so the machine can cut one and score or kiss-cut the other. The SVG works for laser software that takes vectors.

Cricut and Silhouette

Download the Cricut / Silhouette file: an SVG sized in inches with only the cut lines (black) and score lines (blue). In Design Space, set the blue lines to Score and attach. Silhouette Studio Basic can't open SVG, so use the DXF there.

Printing at home

Download the tiled PDF for A4 or Letter. Print at 100% (actual size), check that the scale bar measures 50 mm, then tape the pages together by the crosshair marks and cut out the box.

Frequently asked questions

Hexagon box questions

Is the hexagon box template free?

Yes. The dieline on this page is free to download as SVG, PDF, DXF, PNG or a Cricut file, with no account, watermark or limit. Adding artwork and folding it in 3D happen in the Studio, which needs a free account.

How is a hexagon box measured?

By the inside across the flats, the height of the base and the lid depth. Across the flats is the distance between two opposite flat sides; across the corners is about 1.15 times that. In the Studio and the generator the width field is the size across the flats.

Why are the walls in a row rather than round the hexagon?

A straight row is how hexagonal cartons are usually glued: one glue flap closes the tube, and every wall stands upright on the sheet, so artwork reads the right way up on all six and can run round the box across the creases. The hexagon panel and five flaps then close the end.

How deep can the lid be?

From 10 mm up to the height of the base. A shallow lid is easy to lift; a lid as deep as the base covers it completely and makes a stronger box. The lid play, the glue flap and the flaps can be changed in the Studio or under Flaps and allowances in the generator.

Are both pieces on one dieline?

Yes, one above the other on one sheet. On a Cricut, cut them on two mats if the sheet is larger than 12 × 24 in.
