Using a Cricut or Silhouette: fits a 12 × 24 in mat
- Upload the SVG in Cricut Design Space (Upload > Upload Image) or open it in Silhouette Studio Designer Edition or above. Silhouette Studio Basic cannot open SVG: use the DXF file instead.
- Check the size before cutting: it should match the flat size shown here. If it does not, unlock the proportions and type the width in.
- In Design Space, ungroup the design, select the blue lines and set their operation to Score (or Draw with a scoring stylus), then attach everything so the scores stay in place.
- On a Cricut mat the largest cut is about 11.5 x 23.5 in (292 x 597 mm) on a 12 x 24 in mat. Larger boxes need splitting or a cutting table.
3D Box Studio folds this box in 3D with your artwork; it needs a free account. Check the board, allowances and bleed with your printer before production.
Cutting template: a bottom and four walls laid out as a cross, with a glue ear on each end of the front and back walls that folds in and is glued inside the side wall. Width, depth and height are inside sizes; panels are creased a board thickness wider. Ask your printer to confirm the allowances for their board.
What is a four-corner tray?
A four-corner tray is an open folding-carton tray: a bottom and four walls held square by a glued flap at each corner. Bakeries, fruit packers and retailers use them because they ship flat, set up in seconds and show the product from above. On its own it is a display or takeaway tray; inside a sleeve it becomes a slide box, and with a second tray as a lid it becomes a telescope box.
What is on the dieline
The template draws the tray as a cross from your three measurements.
- A bottom the size of the inside, plus a board thickness.
- Front, back and side walls as high as the inside height.
- A glue ear on each end of the front and back walls, a board clear of the bottom crease and tapered at the top so it slides in.
- Adjustable ear width in the Studio and in the generator under Flaps and allowances.
- Cut, crease, glue, bleed and safe-zone lines on separate layers in the SVG; cut and crease layers in the DXF.
How to fold a four-corner tray
Fold up the front and back walls, fold their ears in at 90°, then fold up the side walls over the ears and glue each ear to the inside of its side wall. Hold the corners square for a minute while the glue grabs. In production a four-corner gluer does the same thing, so trays arrive flat and pop up ready to use.
Choosing the size and board
Width, depth and height are the inside: measure the product and add a few millimetres of room. For pastries, chocolates and light retail, 18–24 pt (0.46–0.61 mm) card is plenty; for fruit and heavier goods, use E-flute. Change the board in the generator and the panels grow to keep the inside size.
Is the four-corner tray template free?+
Yes. The dieline on this page is free to download as SVG, PDF, DXF, PNG or a Cricut file, with no account, watermark or limit. Adding artwork and folding it in 3D happen in the Studio, which needs a free account.
Are the sizes inside or outside dimensions?+
Inside by default. In the generator you can also enter the outside size or the crease-to-crease size a printer quotes, and the inside is worked out for your board.
Does a four-corner tray need glue?+
Yes, one dot or strip on each of the four corner ears, glued to the inside of the side walls. That is what keeps the walls square without a lid.
Can I add a lid?+
Yes. The telescope box template is this tray with a second, slightly larger tray as a lift-off lid, cut on the same sheet.
Can I cut it on a Cricut?+
Yes. Download the Cricut / Silhouette file: cut lines in black, score lines in blue. Most trays up to about 200 × 150 × 40 mm fit a 12 × 24 in mat; the generator tells you if yours does.
