Using a Cricut or Silhouette: larger than a 12 × 24 in mat
- Upload the SVG in Cricut Design Space (Upload > Upload Image) or open it in Silhouette Studio Designer Edition or above. Silhouette Studio Basic cannot open SVG: use the DXF file instead.
- Check the size before cutting: it should match the flat size shown here. If it does not, unlock the proportions and type the width in.
- In Design Space, ungroup the design, select the blue lines and set their operation to Score (or Draw with a scoring stylus), then attach everything so the scores stay in place.
- On a Cricut mat the largest cut is about 11.5 x 23.5 in (292 x 597 mm) on a 12 x 24 in mat. Larger boxes need splitting or a cutting table.
3D Box Studio folds this box in 3D with your artwork; it needs a free account. Check the board, allowances and bleed with your printer before production.
Cutting template: a base with front and back walls whose ears fold in along the sides; each side wall folds double over the ears and locks into slots in the base with two tabs, so the corners hold without glue. The lid hinges on the back wall, with a front tuck and side flaps. Width, depth and height are inside sizes. Turn on the window to cut a rectangle out of the lid, to back with clear film. Ask your printer about food-safe board and inks.
What is a cake box?
A cake box is a one-piece bakery box with a hinged lid, folded up at the counter from a flat sheet. It needs to go together fast, stay square under a heavy cake and open easily, so this one locks its corners without glue and closes with a short tuck. A window in the lid shows the cake without opening the box. The same box suits cupcakes, pastries, cookies and macarons.
What is on the dieline
The template draws the whole box on one sheet from your three measurements.
- A base, with front and back walls whose ears fold in along the sides.
- Double side walls: each folds over a narrow roll strip and drops down inside, trapping the ears, and two tabs lock it into slots in the base.
- A lid hinged on the back wall, with a short front tuck and two side flaps.
- An optional window: a rectangle cut from the lid, set in from its edges by the border you choose.
- Adjustable ears, lid tuck, lid side flaps and window border, and cut, crease, bleed and safe-zone lines on separate layers.
How to fold a cake box
Fold up the front and back walls and fold their ears in. Fold up each side wall over the ears, roll it over and push its inner layer down inside until both tabs click into the slots in the base. Set the cake in, fold the lid's side flaps down, close the lid and tuck the front flap inside the front wall. For a window, glue a sheet of clear food-safe film inside the lid before folding.
Choosing the size and board
Width, depth and height are the inside. Allow about 2 in (50 mm) more than the cake board across, so it can be lifted in and out, and 1 in (25 mm) or more above the tallest decoration. White SBS card of 18–24 pt is standard for cake boxes; use the heavier board for cakes over about 2 kg.
Is the cake box template free?+
Yes. The dieline on this page is free to download as SVG, PDF, DXF, PNG or a Cricut file, with no account, watermark or limit. Adding artwork and folding it in 3D happen in the Studio, which needs a free account.
What size cake box do I need?+
About 2 in larger than the cake across, and 1 in or more taller: an 8 × 8 × 5 in box for a 6 in cake, 10 × 10 × 5 in for an 8 in cake, and 12 × 12 × 6 in for a 10 in cake. The presets above load these sizes.
How do I add a window?+
Tick Cut a window in the lid and set the border, the board left round the window. The dieline gains the window's cut lines and the 3D box shows the hole. Glue clear food-safe film inside the lid to close it.
Does the cake box need glue?+
No. The side walls fold double over the corner ears and their tabs lock into the base, so it folds up flat-to-ready without glue. Only a window film needs glue.
Is it food safe?+
That depends on the board and inks, not the dieline. Ask your printer for food-contact board, or use an uncoated food-grade board with a greaseproof liner for cakes that touch the box.
